May 26 – Medieval Stockholm

GAMLA STAN

Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s oldest neighborhood with walls dating from the 1300s and streets older than that. Our first stop was to see artist Thory Strandh where we heard about Viking designs, Sami imagery, and her personal work. The architecture and history were perfect inspiration for our visual and written journals — the Art Nouveau Rosenbad, Stortorget market square, Rikstagaten, Riddarholman church, and an ancient runestone cemented into a wall. We saw the ACNE design building, where the name Stockholm syndrome was coined after a 1970s hostage situation in Stockholm. Our final stop was a Viking themed restaurant, Aifurs. Much merriment and viking hats topped off the day.
